Cosmetics Counter Etiquette Tips
Here are some great tips that you should know about properly testing products at a cosmetic makeup counter or cosmetic store! This video is really a great source of information for you to not only behave correctly at the makeup counter but also ways to stop you from getting pink eye or some other nasty infection. What is suggested is to do what the man in the video suggests: Do what I do which is very simple things like:
- Test EVERYTHING on the BACK OF YOUR HAND! By doing this you will be able to see the natural color that will show on your skin.
- Never apply products on your face that are out in the open for people to touch or use. Treat it like using a bathroom in public. You should apply the same rules at the makeup counter because the potential for bacteria is just as bad.
- Sanitize hands. -Never ever stick your fingers into product! You should always use cotton swabs to swatch on the back of your hand. You should always use disposable wands just one time and if you need more product then you should use a new wand each and every time without exception.
- PENCILS: If using one on your eyes or your lipsyou should always dip it in alcohol, sharpen, and then dip in alcohol once again. Make sure to WIPE off the alcohol after the 2nd dip, so it doesn’t burn.
- Anything in a squeeze tub can be used right out of the tube itself without any special care.
- You should always spot clean brushes before using them. This will further improve your chances of getting pink eye or some other unseen infection that may be waiting for you right at the cosmetic makeup counter.

ugh…. you are the kind of customer we dread. no offense. do you realize that we also work on commission? Don’t mean to be rude by any means but testing it ensures that you will be happy with it if you decide to buy it. Why would you want to make the extra trip anyways? As long as you sanitize the way he suggested you will not have to be worrying about all those germs.
yep me too.. I deal with it daily. We had a lady today completely mess up our eyeshadows.. she smeared them all over her eyes and left eyeshadow smeared all over the tables. and the roaming kids thing is awful. why not just control your kids and use some discipline. People have no care in the world what we have to deal with!
that’s disgusting… glad ours aren’t like that. I work at Clinique and we never double dip and always use new q-tips, cotton balls are whatever else we use to apply the product with. I would never let someone touch me with something that hasn’t been sanitized.
I rather make the extra trip than contract some disease. Not only that, how do I know that it was correctly sanitized or how long the product has been out for? How do I know there isn’t already some kind of virus (which you can’t kill with just plain alcohol) growing in the product? I rather be safe than sorry.
I’m the customer who buys it, uses it 4 a wk then returns it if I’m not happy w/it. Do u guys hate me? : /

I like quick tips like this and the fast pace is great, I haaate rambling and when people get off track.
“This is a great eyeliner because….is this lighting ok??…..yeah its good, ok now I love this eyelin…eww is that a eyelash on my nose….no just a weird spec…ok sooo eyeliner…” i just mute it and do other things so when I go back to it, it is all loaded up and can fast forward through it. Ok, now IM rambling.

LOOOOOOOOOOVe that you said what had to be said haha I worked at a makeup counter and The people I worked with double-dipped, didnt clean, DISGUSTING! I was mortified when I told them the proper way and they basically laughed and said oh its not a big deal-they’re all contaminated anyway…EIW! Needless to say I ended up quitting Thanks Petrilude!

I really hate when testers are all dirty!!! It’s eeewww, and today I wanted to buy a lipstick and it was in a box but before i bought it I looked if the lipstick wasn’t used already and guess what? It was all crashed in side ….ewww so I just want to say make sure that the products weren’t used before, because even if it was in a box an everything that doesn’t mean anything!
